Integrated Wet Brake Application

Schaeffler's Integrated Wet Brake Application

Brake pad pollution is a serious environmental and health issue. Metal particles from worn brake pads and rotors can contribute up to 55% by mass to the total non-exhaust-traffic-related emissions and can comprise up to 21% of traffic-related emissions. These particles can cause respiratory complications, leading to infections or other illness, particularly in urban areas with higher traffic, and more stop & go braking.

Advantages

  • Fully integrated system (e-axle, gearbox, e-motor, actuators, wet brake)
  • Eliminates conventional brake particulate pollution to avoid the known serious environmental and health issues
  • Improve vehicle dynamics for rough roads
  • Reduced service as the brakes are designed for the lifetime of the vehicle

Features

  • Prevents metal particles from worn brake pads and rotors
  • Eliminates particulate emissions, which can contribute up to 4-8 mg+ (light commercial vehicles) and 20-32 mg+ (heavy commercial vehicles) of particulate emissions per kilometer in conventional braking systems
  • Potential mass savings (total) of 30-45% compared to traditional brake system comprised of rotors and calipers
  • Greatly reduces or potentially eliminates unsprung mass of the braking system
