Bearings for door systems

Door systems in rail vehicles are complex subsystems that are subject to high stresses. They place high demands on reliability and long maintenance intervals.

Schaeffler Group Industrial bearings are used both in passenger vehicles and freight cars.

Passenger Rail Cars

Vehicle manufacturers demand an operating life of up to more than 2.5 million opening cycles, depending of the type of rail vehicle. The opening cycle often involves a swiveling outward motion and a linear opening motion of the wings of the door.

The swiveling movements are safely carried out with INA maintenance-free spherical plain bearings/rod ends. Radial insert ball bearings with flange housings are also used in some cases.

Track roller and guideway systems or linear units with ball type profiled rail units are used for the linear motions.

Track rollers are also used as additional torque supports that safely guide the opening motion. The operating durations are often more than 10 years.

Freight Cars

The door systems in freight cars are very varied. Sliding wall wagons (HIBBNS,…) and self-discharging cars (FALNS,…) are only two examples. The focus is on robustness, a long operating life and low maintenance requirements. These objectives are achieved with INA yoke type track rollers, track rollers, needle roller bearings, and spherical plain bearings manufactured by Schaeffler Group Industrial. They are used for the mechanisms of shutters and covers, sliding mechanisms, guidance systems, to support moments as well as linkages and the bearing supports for drive units.
