Chain drives are not only used in the primary drive or balancer shaft drive. They are also suitable for transmitting the drive moment for a large number of accessory devices. Injection pumps, water pumps and oil pumps are just a few examples. These components either be integrated in existing drives or can be driven by an additional chain. If a chain drives only devices with a low mass moment of inertia and a largely constant moment support, it is possible under certain circumstances to dispense with the use of damped tensioning elements. Economical mechanical tensioners that control the chain exclusively by means of a preloaded spring and have no damping facility are used in this case. The tolerances in the engine and thermally induced geometrical changes are compensated by the tensioners, as are wear of the chain and elastic elongation due to high dynamic loads.
